Forced service is slavery. Volunteer military people would be better in a conflict anyway. People who don't want to be there wouldn't fight as hard, and may even turn the guns on their own.
There were a lot of good men who were drafted in the past, protected their country and their buddies, but I hope it isn't necessary to begin drafting again. However, with so many soldiers in Iraq where will the Army find more men if we become engaged in combat with Iran? The draft may become necessary if we are fighting multiple wars. Let's pray that doesn't happen.
But we have been fighting multiple wars for almost 6 years now. And not only have we been able to keep our numbers up the marine corps grew very quickly from 175k to well over 200k all on a volunteer service. Now we cant build barracks fast enough but thats another story.
What good would it do to force people to serve? There are a number of reasons why it's a bad idea but lets be real SOME of the people don't join because they are cowards; yeah lets send them overseas. There are some legitimate reasons not to join the military as well.
So for me I'd rather have someone that asked for it rather then someone who wants nothing to do with it standing next to me. It takes a special person to go do what we do and a very special person to ask for more and it could be that much more dangerous if people dont do what your supposed to.
