I worked at a newspaper where diversity was celebrated - including a "diversity day" where everyone brought in their ethnic foods. It was certainly more important that you brought your dish than how well you performed your job.
I'm all for productivity.
Now..diversity can have it's good points, but first define if diversity is for etnic reasons or for skill reasons.
Diversity of skills is better than diversity of etnic origins.
I'm all for diversity of skill + productivity.
The first real job I applied for was given to a minority even though I had the highest test scores, highest interview scores, and was the top choice for everyone involved. The person they hired was frequently seen sleeping in the city vehicle but kept the job for a long time because there was so red tape to cut through to fire him. My brothers are both firefighters and saw the same thing in the dept. It's sad that their safety was often compromised for the sake of diversity....
I have a feeling my views on this topic may be in the minority, so to speak. Far too many skilled, productive workers are passed up because they're not a woman or minority. Skills, experience, and work history should be the PRIMARY factors when deciding whether or not to hire them, not their sex or race.
