Well, while I understand you would prefer to have Ron Paul over these two, I hope he doesn't run as an independent. I feel that might take votes away from Obama. lol. I suppose we'll just have to wait and see what happens after the Republican Convention.
Kaz I can only agree with your position to a point. I am a firm believer in the Constitution. I am even firmer on my belief of separation of church and state. What really chaps my hide about most of the organizations involved with this argument is that they claim they don't want to have to offer this type of coverage because it conflicts with their faith, but yet they have no problem holding their hand out for government funding. My view is simple. If you are a religious institution which accepts any type of government funding then you should be prepared to accept the consequences for doing so. If you don't want to have to offer this type of coverage for your own parishioners/students etc. then don't expect the federal government to help fund your church or schools either. It's not right. I don't believe that a person should have to change their faith simply because they wish to use a product like a contraceptive. All this is is just a way for the Catholic Church to enforce abstinence among followers unless actually procreating. Who deserves that right?
Sarah, I would much rather the government stay out of a lot of our lives, but as I've said before it is often times a necessary evil. Now where we disagree is keeping it at a state level. Allowing the states to control this issue is just a bad idea. At least with the federal government it is a guideline that every state must follow equally. If you allow the states to do so then that only plants the seeds for some states allowing control and others none at all. If it isn't equal then it's not truly fair coverage for all. How fair would it be for Tennessee to remove the coverage, but Georgia to allow it? Then not only would that be unfair it would force some to seek coverage elsewhere. Revenue that could have been kept within another state's border. Something as important as this issue should not be decided among the states. It should be national. I absolutely hate that it comes to that, but it's really just necessity.
So Kaz, if it comes down to Romney vs. Obama you will vote for Romney. I know this. You don't even have to tell me. :-) Seriously though, you would choose someone like Santorum over Romney? I just don't understand that. As backward as Santorum's line of thinking is and most likely will be? I understand that Romney appears to be more moderate than some would like, but he also seems to be more reasonable for a Republican. Not to mention that every poll has Santorum trailing way behind in every mock election vs. Obama. Romney, for the moment, appears to be the only Republican with the slightest chance of beating Obama. What are your thoughts?
Maybe the Catholic church should consider a change as they have in so many other areas. On the other hand, I am a woman who has been uninsured and still found a way to get my birth control. There are hundreds of different kinds, many of which are VERY affordable. There are also "government funded" programs such as planned parent hood that give them for free. I personally think it is ridiculous that the catholic church is hanging on to this. Times have changed as has the Catholic church. I still believe the government needs to stay out of our healthcare. NO federal healthcare, lets keep it in the state.
Just out of curiousity TNinfidel how do you feel about Santorum's voting for the Patriot Act and later modification of the Patriot Act? As an atheist his religious views don't bother you that much? If you don't mind elaborating on these I would be most appreciative. Just collecting thoughts.
I was a bit all over the place but to clarify. I am for a woman's choice to choose their physician as well as a religious organizations right to choose an insurance policy that doesn't contradict their fundamental beliefs.
In addition to that the employees of the organization have the right to choose to find another employer if they don't want to pay out of pocket for the birth control.
I saw a short clip on the news of a female student at an ivy league school complaining about the cost of birth control claiming it breaks them financially. This argument would have more validity behind if we were talking a single working mother attending a community college. Ivy League = argument failed.
Considering the two candidates listed I'm basically forced to choose between an establishment moderate or an establishment conservative of convenience.
The main stream media (Especially Fox News) has been selling the Romney campaign to the public from day one. As a Ron Paul supporter I have been disgusted with the lack of respect Ron Paul has received from all of the media and Fox's coverage has actually pushed me away from watching the network. I actually at one point maintained a certain package with Dish Network to keep the Fox News Channel and have since gone with the cheaper package that does not include the channel.
As far as why I will not be voting for Romney; RomneyCare alone is more than enough of a reason to not take Mitt seriously. Once you consider this guy is a repackaged John McCain and yet another loss to Obama it's pretty much a no brainer from there.
There's a lot to like about Santorum; his sweater vests as an example but this guy has several things I do not like. To list a couple, he has the same pro war attitude Bush and Obama have, he is so socially conservative that he actually believes the plan b pill is an abortion, I didn't like his attitude in several of the debates, and finally because he stands no chance of beating Obama. In regards the plan b pill that's not to say I believe in abortion, in fact I believe abortion after the heart has starting beating is murder but plan b is a preventative not an abortion and I get sick of the likes of Bachmann and Santorum claiming otherwise.
Beyond the primary if faced with any of the candidates listed versus Obama hands down I will vote to get our current president out of office as I wholeheartedly disagree with roughly 80% of what the man has done and fear what else he will do with a second term where he isn't running for reelection.
While I am atheist, I will still have to support Santorum. I do not consider him even nearly an ideal candidate but I think he would be more likely to uphold the Constitution.
Romney is a "Progressive" and has even publicly stated so. "Progressives" are traitors and should be removed from this country. You just don't let your enemies have free run of a nation. I won't stand by and watch them dismantle my country.
If Obama is re-elected there will be civil war. Patriots will simply not stand for the "Progressive" erosion of our liberties anymore.
I don't particularly like Santorum but I do like him slightly more than Romney. I see Romney as a FAKE say what's right politician.
The latest rasmussen polls have Ron Paul within a statistical tie of Obama. link to source
