Is GIMP's open source (free) offering better than the high priced Adobe Photoshop products? Is Adobe worth the money and is GIMP even a competitive option for those who don't want to spend hundreds of dollars for the base program?

I like the fact that gimp is free, but CS3 is amazing in all the things it can do.
