We are in a lot of Trouble – Broken

Rivalry Side B | Politics | Other

Did you know that it’s estimated that 47% of Americans will pay no federal income tax for 2009? Is the fact that nearly half of the country enjoys the benefits yet pays nothing in a problem? Is this the American way?Is the tax system broke

Unfortunately it's the democrats who are spending our tax dollars like there's no tomorrow so in this instance it's appropriate. I'll be saying the same thing about the republicans if they get control and continue spending like we are now. I want the Fair Tax Act and so do many of our middle class and wealthy citizens. I think the biggest opposition will come from the nearly 50% of our citizens who don't pay any taxes at all in our present system. They know they've got a good thing going and don't want to see it change.

Ryan, a lot of people in this area are in favor of the Fair Tax policy, but I honestly don't know the ins and outs of it well enough to comment. I will, however, find out what it's all about. Thanks for bringing that up.

I think we should divide the country in half and let the liberals have one side and the conservatives have the other. Guess which side would survive and which side would fail... The time is coming when the non workers are going to outnumber the workers. We'll see how deep the Obama love runs when the welfare checks stop rolling off the presses.

Ummm. We're both on the same side this time because the tax system is in fact broke. It's neither a republican or democratic fight. It's a bipartisan fight. Pull your head out of your behind long enough to quit bs'ing about the dems, and you might see the truth.

There is no question that we all must pay taxes, but it should be fair for everyone. No loopholes for the wealthy, not even contributions to charities or religious organizations. If we wish to support our favorite cause, we'll do it anyway. I think we should have an across-the-board tax for rich and poor alike, and this would be a 'consumer tax.' That would do away with the IRS, income tax, and certainly the up and coming VAT tax. I'm all for that. Wealthy folks will buy big toys, pay big taxes, and poor people will buy very little and contribute accordingly. A set percentage for all of us.

Olivia, Are you familiar with the Fair Tax? Sounds like that would be right up your alley. I'm still on the fence with it but it is looking more appealing by the day. I would feel more comfortable if there was a permanent cap that didn't give the federal government the power to raise it beyond let's say 30%.

I believe it calls for a 23% VAT(not exactly the same but same principle) but also has cost of living credits for the poor (Which I'm not crazy about). I'm sure you've heard of it but if not, take a look.

Those who oppose often spout that it's an additional 23% tax on top of everything else. It's not, it's a Total tax replacement. Good Bye IRS.

Our system makes me so sick at my stomach. I am so tired of carrying everyone else. It needs to be fixed and I don't mean to be negative but I don't think it ever will be unless a miracle happens. I have no faith in this administration and although its already so screwed, I believe they will screw it even more. Unfortunately we have too many people in this world that feel they deserve handouts. I'm tired of it, I pay my taxes and a whole lot of taxes at that.

I have no problem paying my taxes either, but at some point the government will have to realize they have to do something about the tax laws of this country which either do not tax enough or make extreme allowances for the bottom half of this tax-paying nation. Tax laws and codes NEED to be changed! The time for handouts and freebies should be over!!!

I have no problem paying my share (reasonable amount) of taxes to fund our government which provides some great benefits for all of the people. (Highways and defense come to mind). What I have a problem with is nearly half the country paying absolutely nothing and a large number of people actually getting paid to exist. That's right, many people actually receive tax refunds that far exceed their contributions (Witholdings). The entitled are growing in numbers and if 50% doesn't scare you, you fear nothing.
