Political discussion tend to turn heated. Can you be friends with someone who strongly opposes your political view?

Most definitely. My entire family besides my dad has completely different views than I have but I still love them. Granted we get into some pretty heated arguments over it I still have respect for them.

You can definitely be friends - as long as you leave emotions out of it.

I am actually friends with a very loud and outspoken Lib. I adore her but hate most of her views as she does mine. We agree to disagee. =) However we are both in agreement on Obama's healthcare plan. hmmmmm

I'm already friends with many people who oppose most of my political views (Ryan, LOL). I can't see basing a friendship on nothing but political agreement.

I certainly feel that I can be friends with someone who doesn’t agree with me but there is something I have to note; politics will only be discussed if we can have an adult conversation. I won’t name the individual by name (Not that anyone on here knows them) but they are the first to start a political argument (Not discussion) and never has any facts to back up their arguments. I’ve had many conversations with people like this that instantly reply to a valid argument with a “I don’t care”, “You don’t know what you’re talking about”, “You’re a stupid Republican”, etc…

In all honesty there is nothing I enjoy (Okay, stretching it a little) more than having an educated discussion with someone of an opposing view. It doesn’t happen often but when it does both parties usually walk away with some new knowledge instead of immature insults. Bottom line, I’ll befriend just about anyone but if they can’t have a mature discussion about politics, politics will not be discussed.

I have friends from all sides. I draw the line at discussing politics with people who can only debate from an emotional point of view. I like to throw facts back and forth, not mud balls. That being said, I have friends I completely disagree with but enjoy debating. It makes life more interesting.

Isn't it amazing that this is even a question we have to ask? I don't understand how someone can base their friendship on political views, but it does happen. Thankfully, the city I grew up in and my 20 years in the Air Force meant I had to get along with people from different walks of life. One thing I can't relate to is people who have only been around a certain group/demographic and then are shocked when they are exposed to different people.
