There's No Harm In National ID Cards

Rivalry Side B | Politics | News

All Americans may be required to carry a biometric ID Card in order to work. Is that okay with you? 666 anyone?

If we wait to see all the details it will be monday morning and they will have passed it on the week end while we were watching sports or going to church. The time to stand up is now, not when it's too late. I agree with Dennis that they already know everything about us but this is scary. I went to a church service 30 years ago to listen to a bible prophecy preacher. Everything he said sounded like science fiction at the time but now it's all happened and this card sounds like the last thing he talked about. I don't have all the answers but I do know that this is craziness taken to a whole new level. I will go live in my camping shed and eat possum before I will get a card. I have a feeling it will be like giving up your soul. Anybody have a good possum stew recipe?

In my opinion, we are losing our freedom at an alarm rate right now. Having to carry a card which contains all our personal information is waaaaay too much like Big Brother!

I can use one card to do everything

Is that worth sacrificing your privacy and trusting the government with your most personal information? Not too mention the possibility of tracking you.

yes I'm already very easy to find and I have nothing to hide. Now that you mention it, I think I would feel more comfortable if those people who were trying to hide were easier to find. Convenience + security bonus!

Don't forget who your trusting with that information. If that doesn't worry you then nothing ever will. Regardless of your political stance; government officials change every 2, 4, 6, and 8 years. Even if you trust them now, will you 15 years down the road? It's just like the Patriot Act, you may have trusted the administration with that kind of power when it was enacted but would that trust follow with an administration 20 years from now? The power you give them now will never disappear.

I think I'm cool with that.

Frankly, if you really need to be found like, today... you can be found. There is enough information out there on the average Joe to do that. In fact this biometrics card seems (keyword: seems) to only offer convenience, security, and a way to deal with illegal immigration which are all great. I honestly see no downside to it - BUT - it could be the case that that's because I'm judging the issue without knowing all the facts. In light of that, my opinion may change if I find the truth to be otherwise.

The reality is that my opinion on the matter will matter not to those making the final decision. So I won't waste my time reading up on it, and I certainly won't stress over it.

Hopefully you're not just paranoid from getting too wrapped up in anti-Obama/government politics?

I refer to it as a love for personal freedom, responsibility, and beyond; but you can refer to it as whatever you'd like

I love those things too. It doesn't sound to me like this card would take them from you. Boycotting something that hasn't even been fully thought out yet just sounds like baseless paranoia that's all.

To give a real example of why I immediately think something like this is potentially a good idea: What if my landlord hires an illegal & they hurt themselves in my apartment while doing work -> I have no idea if I can be held liable (though I'd be willing to bet that if I lived in California, I would lol). If my landlord weren't able to hire illegals then I wouldn't have that problem.

On the flip side, my rent might go up so... see now there's a reason for me to be against it :)

Even been fully thought out? They're attempting to pass legislation... It's been thought out. In a time where businesses are struggling there going to require new $800 card readers or they'll have to drag employees to government offices to be scanned.

This goes beyond businesses. If you don't question what they're doing before it's been done; it's too late.

I'll be the first to tell you from a technical standpoint this would have plenty of positive benefits; it's what it compromises that concerns me.

FTA: "Lawmakers working to craft a new comprehensive immigration bill..." sounds like they're still "working to craft" it meaning it's not fully thought out. IDK maybe I read it wrong.

I'm torn on this one. Although biometric cards would be a great thing if they were only used for identifications, payments instead of plastic and medical reasons so that doctors could make necessary decisions in the case of your inability to do so, I'm simply just not convinced that this is only ever meant to be their sole use. If it means that the government in any way shape or form can store personal information, use as a tracking, or use as a means for any type of law enforcement they can kiss my a**!!! I don't think so. What is this? 1984!! This would be such an overstep by our government our courts would HAVE to step in. There's no way this will happen! Americans, not democrats or republicans, but Americans will never allow this to happen. I suggest the good people from the states of New York and South Carolina send a clear message next election to oust these two morons! This is just so unbelievably stupid!! I can't even believe we're discussing this! This shouldn't even be an issue in today's world. Has no one ever read George Orwell's 1984? It's just scary!!

I am pleasantly surprised with your response. On my way home from work I was seriously pondering where you would stand on something like this.

No, this is completely ridiculous. Unfortunately there are some idiots out there that will agree with it. If my drivers license isn't enough for them then they can kiss it!!

From the article: "Mr. Schumer said employers would be able to buy a scanner to check the IDs for as much as $800. Small employers, he said, could take their applicants to a government office to like the Department of Motor Vehicles and have their hands scanned there."

Are you kidding me people? Hands scanned? What in the hell is this world coming to? Last time I checked we were American Citizens, not criminals.

It's time for Lindsay Graham to go.
