This is probably not the punishment I would use on my child but I don't think its a bad idea either.

I got tired of my son breaking curfew so I painted a giant sign that read, "Ben, I said be home by 12:00" and then strung it up in front of the house. My son was so mad because we lived on a busy street and everyone saw it. He wasn't late again for a long time.

I doubt he will steal again! I remember taking a candy bar from a store when I was young (35, if I remember correctly! :) Just kidding). My mother made me go back into the store, return the candy and apologize to the store owner. Many other customers witnessed my humiliation. I never did it again!

Nothing wrong in my mind with this kind of punishment. If it deters him from stealing again then more power to the mother.
